South Africa Work Permits

Foreign nationals can apply for work in South Africa on a temporary basis via a number of different permits depending on their circumstances. These permits include: the General Work Permit, Quota Work Permit, Exceptional Skills Work Permit, and the Intra-Company Transfer Work Permit.

General Work Permit

The South African General Work Permit is issued to any foreign national who wishes to work on a temporary basis within South Africa, and whose work position does not fall within the category as determined by the quota work permit.

Quota Work Permit

Usually on an annual basis the Ministers of Labour and Trade & Industry publish a notice within the local Gazette indicating a number of work permits available for which there is a skills shortage within the country.

Exceptional Skills Work Permit

The current South African Immigration Act makes it possible for foreigners with exceptional skills or qualifications to apply for a temporary work permit for up to 3 years.

Intra-Company Transfer Work Permit

The South African Intra-Company Transfer Permit is issued to a foreign national who is being transferred by his or her company to work for their affiliate branch within South Africa. The maximum duration for the permit is 2 years.
